Ouray County Railroad Days

September 16-19, 2010

Ridgway, Colorado

A weekend of history, guided tours, talks and a symposium celebrating Ouray County's world-famous railroad heritage!

Thursday, Sept 16, 9:00 am

Silverton Railroad - day hike at Red Mountain

Guided hike with historical narration along the Silverton Railroad grade from Red Mountain summit to the Guston townsite. Hikers will see Red Mt summit, the Knob, Red Mt townsite, the National Belle Mine, the Red Rt Wye, the Yankee Girl Mine, the Treasury Tunnel branch, the Guston Congregational Church, etc. The hike is 3 to 4 miles downhill, some bushwacking, so you should be in good shape. Bring water, lunch, wear long pants, prepare for weather. Meet at Corkscrew Gulch roadhead, 7.8 miles south of Ouray's Beaumont Hotel on US 550. Tour led by Ridgway Railroad Museum President, Karl Schaeffer

$10 per hiker (both Thur and Fri hikes for $15). Free to members of either the Ridgway Railroad Museum or the Ouray County Historical Society - membership card required.

Friday, Sept 17, 9:00 am

Hikers will see the Guston Depot, Corkscrew Gulch turntable, Silver Bell Mine branch, Ironton Depot site, Albany Mill site, etc. The hike is 3 to 4 miles downhill, some bushwacking, so you should be in good shape. Bring water, lunch, wear long pants, prepare for weather. Meet at Corkscrew Gulch roadhead, 7.8 miles south of Ouray's Beaumont Hotel on us 550. Tour led by Ouray County Historical Museum Curator, Don Paulson

Saturday, Sept 18

Ridgway Railroad Museum Open House
9:00 am - 5:00 pm

The museum at the intersection of routes 550 and 62 will be open, with continuous historic railroad videos and staff on hand to answer questions. Come see motor #1 run - great for kids! Motor #1 demonstration on the half hour - Free

Model Railroad Open House
10:00 am - 12:00 Noon

Visit Don Paulson's Denver and Southwestern Railroad, a 30' x 40' HO/HOn3 railroad based upon the D&RGW/RGS railroads of Southwestern Colorado. Pick up directions to Don's house at the Ridgway Railroad Museum or call Don at 970-325-0931 for directions. Don's house is located 10 minutes from the Ridgway Railroad Museum. A map with directions will be available at the Museum. Visit Don's Railroad Website.

Guided Tours of Historic Railroad Routes. Free but donations accepted.

Take a guided tour along one of our historic railroad routes in the stunning San Juan fall colors!

Rio Grande Southern Railroad route to Lizard Head pass: 9:30 am - return 4:00 pm. Your tour guide is Ridgway Railroad Museum President Karl Schaeffer

(bring a lunch, meet at Ridgway Railroad Museum)

Ouray branch, Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, Ouray to Ridgway: 10:30 am. Your tour guide is Ridgway Railroad Museum Vice-President Jim Pettengill.

(no lunch required, meet at Ridgway Railroad Museum)
